This week our 9th grade class participated in a workshop, spread over three days, by one of our excellent local resources: Family Violence & Rape Crisis Services of Chatham County. FVRC has a scary name, even they admit, but they do some wonderful educational programs and proactive workshops for our students at Woods and around Chatham county.
When I stopped by the workshop this week, our students were learning about the way media messages so often objectify women. While this does not directly lead to sexual violence and relational aggression, it certainly creates a foundation upon which these crimes are more possible. By chipping away that the roots of this unhealthy message we can make an impact on the larger issue. This video by Jean Kilbourne gives a sense of the discussion our student were having:
